We think this world is wonderful and that it is even more beautiful when women are empowered to walk the path they choose. We see this as our mission. That’s why we engage every step and part of our business to create sustainable value for women and the environment. We’re not perfect, but we do our best to improve wherever we can, to make this world a more exciting place for all women. Cause we are TALLY WEiJL, and we care.
We all love animals and TALLY WEiJL certainly does too. Therefore, it's clear to us that no animal should suffer for fashion.
We observe a zero tolerance towards the use of angora wool, real leather, real feathers or real hair in all our products.
Every year, considerable quantities of clothing are wasted instead of being properly recycled. As a fashion company, we see our responsibility in closing the cycle of textiles and have therefore teamed up with I:Collect (I:CO), a global service provider of a very innovative instore take-back and recycling system.
In all our Swiss stores, we have placed recycling boxes for our customers to hand over their old clothes and shoes in exchange for a TALLY WEiJL discount coupon. I:CO is collecting the goods on a regular basis and giving them a new life through reuse or recycling. We are currently working on including more markets in this program.
However, it’s not only about engaging our customers, but starting with ourselves. Therefore, we have installed I:CO boxes ready to collect textile remnants and old samples in our headquarters in Basel. Goods that can no longer be sold due to minor defects are also handed over to I:CO.
We are proud that, thanks to the partnership with I:CO, we can make a valuable contribution to sustainability by preserving resources and reducing textile waste. Your contribution matters, so don’t forget: First, recycle!
TALLY WEiJL counters the devastating trend of consuming and wasting plastic bags. Already a few years ago, we banished all plastic bags from our stores and have been using only recycled paper bags since. With a number of 860 stores worldwide, this measure makes a significant contribution to reducing plastic waste.
Overall, encouraging our customers to a more eco-conscious behavior, we have charged a fee on every paper bag in Switzerland and Germany and donate the revenues to a good cause. In Switzerland, we have been supporting the Aids Foundation for many years now. In Germany, we donate to the environmental non-profit organization One Earth - One Ocean e.V. (OEOO) to support their unique concept of a marine litter cleanup.
OEOO has developed special garbage collection ships, which remove the plastic from waters. This collected waste is then recycled, or converted into sulfur-free fuel oil. An extremely valuable and innovative project, that we supported with a donation of 50,000 euros each in 2017 and 2018. Find more information on OEOO on: https://oneearth-oneocean.com.
Furthermore, all foil that TALLY WEiJL uses as packaging material is made out of recycled plastic. We have a systematic take-back and recycling system for all packaging material that ultimately remains in our distribution centers and in stores (2018: a total of 32 tons of foil and 904 tons of cardboard have been recycled).
For us, treating our planet responsibly means that we are constantly improving in saving resources.
Here you have the most important facts on our initiatives in becoming eco-friendlier, step-by-step:
Choosing the right locations is key in promoting less CO2-emission.
We produce up to 30% of our goods in close-by countries, such as Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia and Portugal. This enables us to save high CO2 emissions. Long track deliveries from Asia are mainly transported by ship.
Thanks to the location of our distribution centers, in the middle of our core markets, transport distances to stores are kept to a minimum. As our headquarters are located in Basel, in the heart of Europe, our employees also travel a lot by train. Within the scope of choosing eco-friendly alternatives for travels by car, we are gradually replacing all our 70 company cars by hybrid vehicles.
We also aim at reducing CO2 on a local scale and it starts with small efforts! That’s why encourage our employees to switch to public transport by offering them the full reimbursement of their bus and train tickets, and at our Campus in Basel, even TALLY bikes that can be used freely. A bit of exercise doesn’t hurt!
Making you happy is what matters the most to us and this means providing you with products that fully respect our quality requirements in terms of health and safety. Therefore, all our suppliers are contractually required to deliver our strict quality and safety specifications.
TALLY WEiJL conducts many quality controls that guarantee the effectiveness of these principles. We run physical tests (e.g. on tear strength, color fastness, washing resistance) and also run evaluations on critical chemical substances.
Every detected defect or flaw is removed immediately. If a test is detected as failed again, we will cancel the production. If not, once the defect is removed, the goods are inspected a third time.
In addition to the mandatory controls, TALLY WEiJL runs quality tests on a voluntary basis. The controls are conducted in accredited laboratories, like UL in Italy, and respect the European regulations and organizations like REACH and the ÖKO TEX Standard.
TALLY WEiJL cares about its products. We care about you.
We love to break the rules, but not when it comes to workers rights, which we take extremely seriously, cause we value every worker as the human being she/he is. This should not even be a question, we think so anyway. It is our responsibility to ensure safe, healthy and fair working conditions for all of our employees and supplier’s employees. This is why we cultivate a zero tolerance towards child and forced labor, unregulated working hours or wages below the legal minimum.
We strongly believe in our codex of rules (“Code of Conduct”) and require full compliance from all our suppliers and subcontractors. We are putting a lot of effort in verifying these strict regulations by systematic audits and inspections. If a case of non-compliance is identified, suppliers will be granted a transitional period, at the end of which, if the situation hasn’t improved, the contract will be terminated.
We want to support a better world where misconducts and disrespect don’t exist. That’s why we like to build on trustworthy and long-term relationships with regular exchange. The majority of our suppliers have been working with us for more than 4 years, some even over 10 years. We mainly produce in Bangladesh, China, Pakistan and Cambodia as well as in Morocco, Turkey, Portugal and Tunisia.
In May 2014, we have also joined the Bangladesh Accord to support a comprehensive and independent inspection of all garment factories in Bangladesh and contributing to improving fire and building safety on site. Because this is an important matter to us, no factory in Bangladesh may manufacture TALLY WEiJL products without being listed in the Accord Active Factory list.
We know, we are not perfect, but we do our best to keep improving and make the world a better place for factory workers. Next step for us is to join the Better Work Program.
To give women the space and freedom to express themselves on female independence, self-determination and individuality, we have launched the #OwnYourVoice events.
